Best & Worst Times to Do Things!

 Fun Facts--

Best times to get airline tickets...Tues. night or Wed. morning at least 21 days ahead.  Airlines look at their weekend sales and set deals on Monday or Tuesday, says Expedia travel expert Erin Krause.

Best time to get a Hybrid car....
The last or second to last day of the month in Sept., Oct., and Nov.  New models are coming in at dealerships and dealers are trying to meet their quotas.

Best time to get a gym membership....
January.  This is when fitness centers cut the most deals to help you with your New Year's resolution.

Best time to avoid waiting at the airport....
Early in the morning on a Tues. or a Sat.  This is when the airports are the least busy and your flight has the best chance of being on time.

Best time to shop for groceries....
A weekday morning.  Supermarket traffic research shows that stores are busier in the evenings and are more hectic over the weekends.  For the freshest food, try Tues. and Fri., which are the days deliveries are usually scheduled.  Or ask the produce manager for delivery dates.

Best time for dental procedures....
Jan. and Feb.  The end of the year flurry of people trying to use up their flexible spending account funds has passed, leaving dentists with more open days in their schedules.

Best time to go running is...
Late in the day if you're racing.  At this time of day your muscles are more powerful, and your heart is at its most efficient.  Health-wise, though, early morning is better because there are fewer exhaust-spewing cars on the road, and the sun hasn't had a chance to intensify pollutants in the air.

Best time to get gas is...
Early in the morning or after sunset.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, cooler temps mean less evaporated gasoline emissions or pollution.  You actually get more gas for your money since gasoline is more dense when it's cool, so you get slightly more than if you get gas when its warmer outside.

Worst time to get a prescription filled is....
The beginning of the month.  That is when social security checks go out and pharmacies are the busiest.

Worst time to have elective surgery is...
July and August if it's at a teaching hospital. Inexperienced medical interns are just starting out.  It is usually better to wait till they've had more experience in the winter and spring.

7 Top Germiest Locations

Here are the 7 Top Germiest Locations!  I'd say to avoid them, but most of them are places we would have trouble avoiding.  So be prepared....

Lemon Wedges
According to a 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental Health, nearly 70% of the lemon wedges perched on the rims of restaurant glasses contain disease-causing microbes. When the researchers ordered drinks at 21 different restaurants, they found 25 different microorganisms lingering on the 76 lemons that they secured, including E. coli and other fecal bacteria. Tell your server that you'd prefer your beverage sans fruit. Why risk it?

Condiment dispensers
It's the rare eatery that regularly bleaches its condiment containers. And the reality is that many people don't wash their hands before eating, says Kelly Reynolds, PhD. So while you may be diligent, the guy who poured the ketchup before you may not have been, which means his germs are now on your fries. Squirt hand sanitizer on the outside of the condiment bottle or use a disinfectant wipe before you grab it. Holding the bottle with a napkin won't help; napkins are porous, so microorganisms can pass right through, Reynolds says.

Restroom door handles
Don't think you can escape the restroom without touching the door handle? Palm a spare paper towel after you wash up and use it to grasp the handle. Yes, other patrons may think you're a germ-phobe--but you'll never see them again, and you're the one who won't get sick.

Soap dispensers
About 25% of public restroom dispensers are contaminated with fecal bacteria. Soap that harbors bacteria may seem ironic, but that's exactly what a recent study found. "Most of these containers are never cleaned, so bacteria grow as the soap scum builds up," says Charles Gerba, PhD. "And the bottoms are touched by dirty hands, so there's a continuous culture feeding millions of bacteria." Be sure to scrub hands thoroughly with plenty of hot water for 15 to 20 seconds--and if you happen to have an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, use that, too.

Grocery carts
The handles of almost two-thirds of the shopping carts tested in a 2007 study at the University of Arizona were contaminated with fecal bacteria. In fact, the bacterial counts of the carts exceeded those of the average public restroom. Swab the handle with a disinfectant wipe before grabbing hold (stores are starting to provide them, so look around for a dispenser). And while you're wheeling around the supermarket, skip the free food samples, which are nothing more than communal hand-to-germ-to-mouth zones.

Airplane bathrooms
When Gerba tested for microbes in the bathrooms of commercial jets, he found surfaces from faucets to doorknobs to be contaminated with E. coli. It's not surprising, then, that you're 100 times more likely to catch a cold when you're airborne, according to a recent study in the Journal of Environmental Health Research. I bring sanitized wipes to clean the tray off.  I also take an Immune Support product before the flight.

Doctor's office
A doctor's office is not the place to be if you're trying to avoid germs. These tips can help limit your exposure.

1. Take your own books and magazines (and kid's toys, if you have your children or grandchildren with you).

2. Also pack your own tissues and hand sanitizers, which should be at least 60% alcohol content.

3. In the waiting room, leave at least two chairs between you and the other patients to reduce your chances of picking up their bugs. Germ droplets from coughing and sneezing can travel about 3 feet before falling to the floor.

For all these places, just remember to wash hands frequently with soap and water.

Now that you are totally disgusted, just realize you are bound to come in contact with germs just about everywhere...so wash hands and BE SMART!

What is Laminine?

I love this product...a whole food supplement...called Laminine!  It helps with stress, calms you, helps you sleep better, and makes you feel happier.  My youngest son, who probably has a bit of ADHD, takes 2 a day and is more focused at school.  I haven't had a single report from teachers at his school that he is acting up in class!  It has a 30 day money back guarantee, so I highly recommend trying it!  Thanks.

Prestigious Doctor's Examination of LAMININE

Dr. Christian is a Naturopathic Doctor with a PHD in Nutrition; she is a registered nurse and is certified from the Duke University for Hospital Administration. She's run hospitals and taught nursing programs while also having a degree in Psychology. She still has a private clinical practice.

Dr. Christian writes
For Emotional Health "Laminine is like nothing we've ever known."  Laminine is a Functional Food.

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) - is found in Laminine but no longer is found in the adult body. It vanishes like Glutathione. It improves neuronal function and reprograms the adult stem cells and amino acids, giving the body the power to fix itself.

These stem cells can then go to ANY area of the body needing repair.
This means Mental healing, Emotional Healing and Physical Healing.
Fibroblast Growth Factor reprograms, repairs, regenerates and corrects wherever it is needed. It is the 'General' that tells the 'troops' (amino acids) where to go.

Whenever FGF is present there is a dramatic uptake in peptides and amino acids (in other words proteins are put to work and are usable!)
Important! In 1962 it was found that Fibroblast Growth Factor feeds and nurtures any stem cells in SCAR tissue - it reprograms and corrects them. Many neurological issues are caused by scarring of the brain (stroke, autism, etc) uptake of natural supplements.

Laminine helps with: stroke victims, paralysis (it's the scarring that creates the paralysis), parkinson's, neurological problems, rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia, depression, anger issues, fatigue, dissolves plaque and corrects the lining of the vascular system.

Alzheimer’s disease: Initially they thought it was mental but now they think it's a virus that leaves a scar on the brain. Viruses were causing plaque, which are scars and Laminine dissolves the scars and corrects the tissues.

Lyme disease: Laminine can reverse neurological damage. When asked about this disease, Dr. Christian said, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" Dosage would be 3 three times a day.

Egg allergy? Dr. Christian said to Start Slow and administer Laminine even with an egg allergy.
1/2 capsule for a week and 1 daily capsule for another week to build tolerance.

Dosages: There is no chance of overdosing. Remember this is a FOOD.

How Much Water should I Drink each Day?

It is not clear how much water intake is needed by healthy people, though most advocates agree that 6-7 glasses of water (approximately 2 liters) daily is the absolute minimum amount required to maintain proper hydration.
If you don’t regularly measure in liters, then many recommend that your minimum daily drinking water intake should be 1/2 ounce of water per lb. of body weight. For example, a 200 lb. man should be drinking at least 100 ounces of water daily, or almost 3 quarts of water.

Like mother earth herself, the average human body is comprised of approximately 70% water. It is no exaggeration then to say that water is “the basis of vitality and long life”. After all, water makes up 82% of your blood, 75% of your muscle, 25% of your bone, and 76% of your brain tissue!
And staying well hydrated not only keeps all your vital organs humming along, it helps to beautify your skin, lubricate your joints, and boost your energy levels.

It is estimated that as much as 75% of the population is not fully hydrated. In fact, Chronic Dehydration contributes to and even produces pain and many degenerative diseases that can be prevented and treated by increasing your daily water intake. This, alone, should be incentive enough.
So...Drink UP!!!

8 Great Gluten-Free Foods

A nice article so you can discover the 'other' flours if you want to be Gluten-Free!

8 Great Gluten-Free Foods You Need to Know
By Katrine van Wyk

You can certainly live a delicious and gluten-free life without resorting to cardboard crackers or highly processed, gluten-free baked goods and cookies!

There are plenty of nutritious alternatives out there that also happen to be gluten-free. Whether you just want to cut back on your intake of this hard-to digest, glue-like protein, have an allergy or sensitivity to gluten or you simply want some new ideas to supplement in to your diet – these foods will rock your boat!

1. Quinoa

Quinoa is actually a seed, a member of the grass family and not even a grain at all! It is however often referred to as a grain because of having similar flavor and cooking properties. This now hugely popular (read trendy!) food can be found in all sort of salad combination, in protein bars, crackers and even chocolate! I love making a bowl of quinoa, topped with steamed vegetables and a big poor of creamy sauce from herbs and nuts (very much inspired byCafé Gratitude! ) One of the huge benefits of quinoa, especially for someone living on a plant based diet, is that it contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein!

2. Millet

This is quinoa’s somewhat dryer sister and another great source of protein for people on a plant based diet. Millet is in fact a mineral-rich seed often found in birdseed mixes (fun fact!) It makes a mean mashed potato substitute when mixed and mashed up with some steamed or roasted cauliflower. Leftover cooked millet makes an easy breakfast porridge when mixed with some almond milk, cardamom, raw honey and fresh berries.

3. Amaranth

Amaranth is a super tiny seed similar to millet and quinoa and also a great plant source of protein, especially of the essential amino acid lysine, which other grains are low in. It is even thought to help lower cholesterol. Amaranth works great in soups, stews and porridges. The seeds are very fine and tend to get bit creamier and binding when cooked (think pudding and porridge texture!) Amaranth flour also works well in pancakes and breads. And talk about sustainability! Amaranth grows very rapidly and is thought of as a weed in many areas.

4. Brown Rice Mochi

You may have heard of mochi int eh form of  ice cream treats at Japanese restaurants. But, did you know there is also a delicious baked pastry version. Made with only brown rice this is as clean as it gets. With plenty of different flavor varieties to choose from for flavor (from dried fruit , nuts and seeds) you can satisfy both a sweet and savory craving with these warm and chewy treats. Cut up a few squares, pop it in the oven for 10 minutes and watch them rise to the occasion. I love dipping mine in some applesauce and almond butter!

5. Buckwheat Noodles

Love yourself some stir-fry or udon soup? Try using 100% buckwheat noodles next time. They have a really smooth texture and a hearty flavor that can stand up well to spicy foods.  Buckwheat is good for your cardiovascular system and great source of magnesium!  And despite it’s name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and does not contain any gluten!

6. Chia Pudding

Folklore attests that the chia seed was cultivated by the Aztec and was so valued that it was given as an annual tribute by the people to the rulers. So, we’re talking real, ancient super food here, people! You already know these six reasons why you should eat chia, so let’s get right into the cooking!

It can be turned into a delicious and decadent pudding simply by adding your nut milk of choice, some vanilla extract, a spoon of raw cacao or carob and something sweet like honey, maple syrup or stevia. You can also stir and sprinkle chia seeds in to any smoothie recipe or your morning porridge!

7. Zucchini Noodles

That’s right. This is a great pasta and noodle alternative and it’s all about the cutting technique. If you are looking to cut down on calories, carbs and starches, these “noodles” are sure to satisfy that pasta craving! Use a spiral slicer or a mandolin to get the thin, long spaghetti like strips, dress with some fresh tomato sauce or a nutty pesto. Tada!

8. Lettuce Wraps

Need a carrier for all your stuffing? You can certainly skip the grains and pseudo-grains all together and go for leaves. Romaine and Boston lettuce leaves are big enough to hold a variety of fillings, just like a taco-shell or tortilla. You can also try to quickly blanch large collard green leaves and use those as alternative wraps. I also love using nori - think sushi maki and hand rolls. Roll up some nut butter, your favorite chopped vegetables, some avocado and a sprinkle of sprouts.

What Happens to the Body when you Drink a Coke

I know I have been posting a lot about the dangers of drinking Soda, but I feel people need to know!
When somebody drinks a Coke (or any soda) watch what happens…
  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • >60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.
So there you have it, an avalanche of destruction in a single can. Imagine drinking this day after day, week after week. Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener.

The Hidden Dangers in Soda

By now, it's probably fair to say that most Americans know soda isn't a health-promoting drink. Over the years, the carbonated beverage has been blamed for the obesity epidemic and rising healthcare costs. Some public health experts have even called to put a tax on soda to help deter people from drinking so much of it. While love handles and diabetes are obvious problems associated with soda, drinking the sweet carbonated beverages harbors hidden threats, too.

1. It causes invisible fat buildup around your organs.
In the latest bad news for the soda industry, Danish researchers discovered that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in dangerous hidden fats. In the study, researchers asked participants to drink either soda sweetened with 50 percent glucose and 50 fructose (table sugar, the soda sweetener of choice in Denmark), milk containing the same amount of calories as the regular soda, diet cola, or water every day for six months.

While total fat mass remained the same across all beverage-consuming groups, researchers say dramatic increases in fats that are hard to detect with the naked eye occurred. Those who drank the regular cola experienced a 132 to 142 percent increase in liver fat, a 117 to 221 percent jump in skeletal fat, and about a 30 percent increase in both triglyceride blood fats and other organ fat. The regular soda-drinking group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol, compared to the people who drank beverages.

In America, many sodas are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup that has been shown to cause even worse fat buildup. Avoid turning to diet soda as a healthy alternative. Artificial sweeteners and food dyes have been linked to brain cell damage and hyperactivity; people who drink diet soda are also more prone to developing diabetes.

2. Some contain toxic flame retardants.
Some popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use a toxic flame retardant chemical ingredient to keep the artificial flavoring from separating from the rest of the liquid. Brominated vegetable oil, also sometimes listed as BVO on soda and sports drink, can cause bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders.

3. You're taking part in the biggest science experiment on the planet.
Many soda brands on the market in America today are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, a heart-harming man-made compound derived mainly from genetically engineered (GE) corn. GE technology was only introduced into our food chain in the 1990s. We don't know the long-term health impacts of their use because the corporations that developed the crops never had to test to make sure it's safe over the long term. Other independent scientists are finding that GE crops are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging, and even infertility.

Kangen Water Scam Truth

 Is Kangen Water a Scam?

I wondered myself a few years ago when I was introduced to this water. There were other water ionizers on the market that claimed to make the same type of water as this Enagic machine. Could the price difference really be worth it?
It is. I have been sharing Kangen Water with people for several years now. When I test my water it still consistently makes negative ORP (high antioxidant) water with an accurate pH reading.

What are some things to look for in a quality water ionizer?

 1. The motor has to be over 200 watts to ionize stable hexagonal water. [Enagic has 235 watts,
most companies have 50-90 watts]
2. The surface area of the plates the machine uses to ionize water must be over 200 square
inches to produce abundant hexagonal water. [Enagic is 266 square inches which is similar to a
legal sheet of paper compared its competitors whose plates are the size of a playing card]
3. The unit has a self cleaning feature.(I believe this is the only unit on the market that does this.)
4. A ph range of 2.5 -11.5 is ideal. If you are going to invest in a quality machine don't short
change yourself. [I believe Enagic is still the only machine with this ph range]
5. The Enagic warranty of 5 years is an indication of quality. It is the standard against which all
other machines are compared.
6. Enagic is built for a lifetime with 'component replacement' engineering. Without this, the
machine becomes disposable.

What are some Certifications of Quality?

1. Certification as a medical device. Only devices that are effective in treating disease will
have this certificate. A medical device in Japan, ranked #1 in the world in health is highly
sought after. [currently only Enagic]
2. Enagic is endorsed by the Japanese Association of Preventative Medicine for Adult
Diseases. They do extensive research, testing and screening before they endorse any
product. They only endorse one product per industry.
3. Enagic Certification and Endorsement from Japanese Ministry Health - the equivalent of
the FDA. Having Japanese certification is key here since Japan has been the benchmark of
health for decades and is way ahead of all countries when it comes to water ionizers.
4. The Enagic company is ISO 9001 compliant. This ensures manufacturing quality. [The
ionizers are built one at a time by one technician who must sign off on the quality of each
ionizer. assembled]
5. Enagic is certified with the "Direct Sellers Association of America." This ensures you that
their sales and business practices are fair, honest and customer oriented.
6. Enagic is UL underwritten. Safety and Liability are important factors to consider! UL
underwriting assures you of both.

So---if you are considering making a big change in your health...then
Change Your Water & Change Your Life!

Pub Med Articles for Laminine

Have questions about the science behind the effectiveness of Laminine?

Many science articles are available at http://www.pubmed.gov.

That site is governed by the National Institutes of Health and is the repository of Worldwide peer reviewed science.  It is the 'gold standard of published science'.

Because Laminine is proven to reduce Cortisol by 50% we can see from the published studies if there is a connection between a disease and cortisol by typing it into the search engine.

I got some interesting results and found the following:

Cortisol and insomnia                        128 published papers finding a correlation

Cortisol and obesity                            1715  " "

Cortisol and depreession                   5607  "   "

Cortisiol and testosterone                 5320  " " "

Cortisol and memory                          762  "   "

Cortisoil and anxiety                          1876  "   "   "

Cortisol and pain                                1827  "   "

Additives in Your Food

Poisons in Your Food
Many additives in the food you eat may be very dangerous to your health. But you'd never know it if you believed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Take, for example, Olestra, also known as Olean. Over the objections of many leading food scientists, this fat substitute was approved and claimed safe by the FDA. However, Olestra causes diarrhea and abdominal cramping. And there is evidence that it can contribute to cancer, heart disease and blindness. Luckily for consumers, all products which contain Olestra must have a warning on the label.

That's not the case for the artificial sweetener Aspartame, also known as Nutrasweet. Aspartame can cause birth defects, central nervous system disturbances, menstrual difficulties, brain damage in phenylketonurics, seizures, death and a long list of other reactions too numerous to mention. It may cause irreversible health damage over the long term. Aspartame was approved and claimed safe by a specially appointed FDA Commissioner after his own Board of Inquiry that investigated aspartame claimed it unsafe. This FDA Commissioner later left the FDA to work for the drug company that produces aspartame.

Then there's monosodium glutamate (MSG) and free glutamate, flavor enhancers which have been approved by the FDA. MSG may cause a variety of symptoms, including headaches, itching, high blood pressure and allergic reactions. Free glutamate, the active ingredient in MSG, may cause dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, drowsiness and even brain damage, especially in children. Because of bad publicity, food manufacturers found ways to hide MSG in foods they produce. They list the ingredients that contain MSG but not the MSG itself. Or they use free glutamates instead of MSG. For example, broth may be listed as an ingredient on a label. Broth may contain MSG, but the ingredients in the broth are not required to be listed on the label. Hydrolyzed soy protein, a common ingredient in tuna, is high in free glutamates, but does not contain MSG. The label can legally say no MSG. Even if the label says "all natural ingredients" and "no preservatives," the product could contain harmful additives.

Almost all packaged foods, even so called "health foods", have additives in them, and many are harmful or inadequately tested. The manufacturer hopes you'll think these are healthy natural products, but if you read the list of ingredients, you'll find ingredients that are not common food items. If you learn to interpret food labels, you'll find that many of these ingredients are harmful or of questionable safety.

So, how do you know which foods are really safe to eat? Dr. Christine Farlow, in her handy pocket-sized book, Food Additives: A Shopper's Guide To What's Safe & What's Not, now in its 2004 revised edition, makes it easy to identify which additives are harmful and which are not. She classifies 800 commonly used food additives according to safety, whether they may cause allergic reactions and if they are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. In just seconds, the average person can find out if an additive in the food they're buying is harmful to their health. It's clear, concise and easy to use. Make this book your constant grocery shopping companion and you'll never again wonder about the safety of the ingredients listed on the package. You'll know.

Dr. Christine H. Farlow, D.C. is a chiropractor, nutritionist and author. She has helped thousands improve their health through nutrition. For more information on food additives and healthy eating, visit http://www.healthyeatingadvisor.com or contact Dr. Farlow.

The Bad News about Canola Oil

Canola is bad oil, a bad fat.Canola is a bad oil, a bad fat. It is one of the worse things Whole Food Stores and other health food stores continue to sell. They need to change this. Look carefully at the labels of their prepared foods and you will see canola used as the oil frequently.

Olive oil comes from olives. Sesame seed oil comes from sesame seeds. But what is canola oil? Canola is actually a made up word for a genetically modified product derived originally from Canada.

Canola stands for 'Canadian oil low acid.' It is a Canadian invention and subsidized by the government. The subsidies make it very cheap to use, so almost all processed or packaged foods contain canola oil. Be sure to read the ingredients. Here is why!

THE SCOOP ON CANOLA
Canola oil is developed from the rapeseed plant, which is part of the mustard family of plants. These oils have long been used for industrial purposes (in candies, lipsticks, soaps, inks, lubricants) It is an industrial oil....not a food!

Rapeseed oil is the source behind mustard gas, and on its own, it causes emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability and blindness. But through the beauty of genetic modification, we now sell it as edible oil.

It has been marketed as wonder oil that is low in saturated fats with a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. It is recognized by the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association based on the belief that the absence of saturated fats alone makes it healthy.
